Armed Forces Bill — Clause 8 — Desertion — Life imprisonment — 22 May 2006 at 18:00
Those voting No rejected the change to Section 8 of the Armed Forces Bill which says:
A person guilty of [desertion] is liable to any punishment [available to Court Martial], and any sentence of imprisonment... [of up to] two years, *[or of life if he intends to avoid a "relevant service" or was under orders when he deserted]*.by removing the words in bold which allows for life imprisonment to be imposed for desertion. The definition of "relevant service" is
"(a) actions or operations against an enemy; (b) operations outside the British Islands for the protection of life or property; or (c) military occupation of a foreign country or territory."The other amendment discussed in the same debate, but not voted on, was to delete part (c).
