Emergency Budget — Value Added Tax — 28 Jun 2010 at 21:46

The majority of MPs voted in favour of raising VAT to 20% from the 4th of January 2011.

The text of the motion MPs voted in favour of was:

  • That provision be made for and in connection with increasing the standard rate of value added tax.

This followed an announcement in the budget[1] saying:

  • On 4 January next year, the main rate of VAT will rise from 17.5% to 20%

As one of two votes following the debate on the Emergency Budget support for this motion might be taken as general support for the budget as a whole.
