Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill — Second Reading — 6 Sep 2010 at 21:43

Stewart Jackson MP, Peterborough voted in favour of a referendum on using the Alternative Vote system in general elections and for parliamentary constituency boundary changes which would have reduced the number of MPs from 650 to 600.

The majority of MPs voted for the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill[1] to be read a second time ie. for it to continue on its path towards becoming law.

The Bill provides for the next UK General Election to be held under the Alternative Vote system, provided this change is endorsed in a referendum on 5 May 2011 and boundary changes have been made to reduce the size of the House of Commons to 600[2]. The result of the referendum was to keep the current First Past The Post system[3].
