The majority of MPs voted for both
- a referendum on introducing the Alternative Vote system for electing MPs, and
- to equalise the number of electors in each constituency via boundary changes. This process would also reduce the number of MPs from 650 to 600.
The vote was technically on whether the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill[1][2] should be read a for a third time ie. whether it ought continue on its path towards becoming law. As this vote allowed the Bill to complete its journey through the Commons, the Bill was then taken to the House of Lords for Consideration there.
