Business of the House — Suspension of Usual Rules of Proceedure to Enable Rearrangement of Next Day's Business — 8 Dec 2010 at 19:00

Stewart Jackson MP, Peterborough voted to suspend the House of Commons' usual rules of procedure so the following day's business could be rearranged.

The majority of MPs voted to suspend the House of Commons' usual rules of procedure so the following day's business could be rearranged.

The motion supported by the majority of MPs in this vote was:

  • That, at this day's sitting, proceedings on the Motion in the name of Sir George Young relating to Business of the House (Thursday) may be proceeded with, though opposed, until any hour

The approval of the motion in this vote enabled a timetable for the consideration of the draft Higher Education (Basic Amount) (England) Regulations the following day, a Thursday, to be approved by the House of Commons. The reason for the timetable was given, by the MP proposing it, as[1]:

  • It allows for the motions in the name of the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills relating to higher education[2] to be debated together and for the Questions to be put after five hours or at 5.30 pm, whichever is earlier.
