Localism Bill — Schedule 2 — Power for Secretary of State to Impose Change to Mayor and Cabinet Executive — 17 May 2011 at 19:49

Stewart Jackson MP, Peterborough voted for the Secretary of State to have the power to implement change a local council's system of governance to a mayor and cabinet executive.

The majority of MPs voted for the Secretary of State to have the power to implement change a local council's system of governance to a mayor and cabinet executive.

MPs were considering the Localism Bill[1]; the text of amendment rejected in this vote was:

  • Amendment 41, page 211, line 18, leave out from beginning to end of line 31 on page 213.

This would have deleted the clause 9N of a New Part 1A of the Local Government Act 2000 which Schedule 2 to the Localism Bill would have inserted[2]. The clause in question was titled "Power to implement change to mayor and cabinet executive" and gives the Secretary of State the power to order a council "starts to operate a mayor and cabinet executive"; the current leader of the council would become the "shadow mayor" until an election for mayor was held.
