Finance Bill — New Clause 10 — VAT — 28 Jun 2011 at 25:22
Simon Reevell MP, Dewsbury voted to reject a proposal to assess the impact of the rate of VAT on the UK's economic growth.
The majority of MPs rejected a proposal to assess the impact of the rate of VAT on the UK's economic growth.
The rejected motion stated:
- The Treasury shall, within three months of the passing of this Act, report to Parliament its assessment of the impact of the rate of VAT on UK economic growth.’
Labour opposition members spoke in the debate in favour of a VAT cut; they were in favour of a report because they thought it would show the current 20% VAT rate was damaging the economy and ought be reduced. Labour MP Mr Hanson, who proposed the rejected motion stated during the debate:
- Labour policy is to have a temporary reduction [in VAT] to tackle the real issues that we all face in our constituencies in relation to jobs, living standards and the future of our businesses.
