Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill — Schedule 8 — Threshold for Police and Crime Panel Veto of Chief Constable Appointment — 12 Sep 2011 at 21:45

Stewart Jackson MP, Peterborough voted to set the threshold proportion of Police and Crime Panel members required to vote to veto the appointment of a Chief Constable at two-thirds rather than three-quarters.

The majority of MPs voted to set the threshold proportion of Police and Crime Panel members required to vote to veto the appointment of a Chief Constable at two-thirds rather than three-quarters.

MPs were considering the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill. The motion rejected in this vote was:

  • That this House disagrees with Lords amendment 98.

Lords amendment 98 stated[2][3]:

  • Page 135, line 16, leave out “three-quarters” and insert “two-thirds”

This would have effect on Schedule 8 of the Bill[4][5] titled: "Appointment, suspension and removal of senior police officers" and reduce the threshold for a police and crime panel vetoing the appointment of a Chief Constable appointment from three-quarters to two-thirds. The threshold is set in respect of the number of members of the police and crime panel at the time.
