MPs were considering the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill[1]. The amendment rejected in this vote was:

  • Amendment proposed to new clause 18: (e), line 16, at end insert—
  • ‘(2A) A breach of the provisions of this section shall be an offence, punishable on summary conviction by a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or on indictment for a term of imprisonment not exceeding two years, or a fine, or both.’.

New clause 18[2] was titled Rules against referral fees and provided for a ban on referral fees relating to legal services in connection with a claim or potential claim damages for personal injury or death. The amendment proposes a criminal penalty for breaching the ban.
