Local Government Finance Bill — Carry over to next Parliamentary session — 11 Jan 2012 at 19:44
Andrew Stephenson MP, Pendle voted to allow local councils to retain a proportion of the business rates generated in their area and to localise assisting those in financial need to pay their council tax.
The majority of MPs voted in favour of the Local Government Finance Bill[1] continuing to be considered in the next session of Parliament if consideration of it had not been completed in the current session.
A vote against this provision is a vote reducing the chance of the Bill becoming law.
The explanatory notes to the Bill[2] summarise the core provisions contained within the Bill:
- Enabling local councils to retain a proportion of the business rates generated in their area.
- Localising the systems for helping those in financial need pay council tax by abolishing the council tax benefit and replacing it with local council tax reduction schemes.
The approved motion stated:
- That if, at the conclusion of this Session of Parliament, proceedings on the Local Government Finance Bill have not been completed, they shall be resumed in the next Session.
