London Local Authorities Bill — Street Litter Control Notices — Application to All Non Domestic Premises — 25 Jan 2012 at 16:45

The majority of MPs voted against enabling street litter control notices to be issued in relation to all premises other than dwellings rather than just commercial or retail premises.

A street litter control notice imposes requirements on occupiers of premises in relation to such litter or refuse. Requirements must relate to the clearing of litter or refuse from the specified area and can, for example, require the provision of, and emptying of, receptacles for litter or refuse.

MPs were considering the London Local Authorities Bill[1]. In this vote an amendment to remove clause 5 of the Bill was rejected. The clause in question stated:

During debate hospitals and educational establishments were cited as examples of premises which would be brought into the scope of the provision if the rejected amendment had been accepted.
