Ian Lavery MP, Wansbeck voted against Employment Tribunal proceedings in respect of unfair dismissal being heard by an Employment Judge sitting alone, rather than by a full panel.
The majority of MPs voted to enable Employment Tribunal proceedings in respect of unfair dismissal to be heard by an Employment Judge sitting alone, without the need for a full panel.
The motion approved by the majority of MPs was:
- That the draft Employment Tribunals Act 1996 (Tribunal Composition) Order 2012, which was laid before this House on 6 February, be approved.
Prior to this order the position was that employment tribunals usually sat with three members hearing a case. One of the three members was an Employment Judge, and the other two were members drawn respectively from panels of people appointed after consultation with organisations representative of employees, or of employers.
