Electoral Registration and Administration Bill — Wait for Successful Data Matching Pilots — 27 Jun 2012 at 17:00

Stewart Jackson MP, Peterborough voted not to wait for the positive outcome of data-matching pilots before removing people from the electoral register following a move to individual voter registration.

The majority of MPs voted against a proposal to wait for the positive outcome of data-matching[1] pilots before removing people previously on the electoral register who are not included under individual registration.

The "data matching" referred to is the use of Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and other databases to determine eligibility to vote.

The rejected amendment proposed by MP Wayne David (Caerphilly, Labour) which was the subject of the vote stated:

  • page 14, line 17, at end insert ‘with the exception of Schedule 5, Part 2, which shall come into force by order only once—
  • (a) the data matching pilots for pre-verification purposes established by the Electoral Registration Data Schemes Order 2012 have been completed,
  • (b) the Electoral Commission has reported on these schemes as under the terms of that Order, and
  • (c) the Electoral Commission believes that the completeness of the register will not be negatively affected.’.
