Opposition Day — Rail Fares — 5 Sep 2012 at 15:45
Graham Allen MP, Nottingham North voted to cap annual rail fair increases at 1% above inflation and to ban increases in excess of that limit.
The majority of MPs voted against capping annual rail fair increases at 1% above inflation and to ban increases in excess of that limit.
The wording use was probably selected in light of the cap on rail fare increases in effect at the time of the vote being in relation to average fares so allowing some fares to rise in excess of the cap if they were balanced by decreases elsewhere[1].
The text of the rejected motion stated:
- That this House
- believes that the rising cost of rail travel is adding to the financial pressures facing many households; and
- calls on the Government to restore the one per cent above inflation cap on annual fare rises for 2013 and 2014, and to ban train operators from increasing fares beyond that strict limit.
