Public Service Pensions Bill — Clause 9 — Power to Alter Public Sector Pension Ages Following Capability Reviews — 4 Dec 2012 at 18:00

Anne Milton MP, Guildford voted with the majority (Teller for the Noes).

The majority of MPs voted against empowering ministers to adjust the normal pension ages of those in certain public sector roles following a capability review.

MPs were considering the Public Service Pensions Bill.[1] The amendment rejected in this vote was:

  • Amendment: 16, in clause 9, page 5, line 29, at end insert—
  • ‘(2A) Subsections (1) and (2) shall not apply in relation to any category of public service worker as the Secretary of State may by order specify following the publication of a scheme specific capability review.’.

At the time of the vote subclauses 9(1) and 9(2) [2] stated:

  • (1) The normal pension age of a person under a scheme under section 1 must be—
  • (a) the same as the person’s state pension age, or
  • (b) 65, if that is higher.
  • (2) Subsection (1) does not apply in relation to—
  • (a) fire and rescue workers who are firefighters,
  • (b) members of a police force, and
  • (c) members of the armed forces.
  • The normal pension age of such persons under a scheme under section 1 must be 60.

The amendment sought to empower ministers to disapply subsection 1 in relation to other classes of workers following a "scheme specific capability review".
