Finance Bill — New Clause 5 — Mansion tax — 17 Apr 2013 at 16:30

Iain Duncan Smith MP, Chingford and Woodford Green voted against considering a mansion tax

The majority of MPs voted against requiring the Chancellor to review the possibility of introducing a "mansion tax". Mansion tax is a term used to describe a requirement for those owning residential properties worth over a certain amount to pay a fraction of the property's value (or a fraction of its value over a certain amount) to the Government each year in tax.

The text of the rejected new clause proposed was:

  • The Chancellor shall review the possibility of bringing forward a mansion tax on properties worth over £2 million and publish a report, within six months of the passing of this Act, on how the revenue could be used to fund a tax cut for millions of people on middle and low incomes as part of a fair tax system.
