The majority of MPs rejected a proposal to limit material omitted from contracts under which subsidies are paid to electricity generators when they are put before Parliament to just trade secrets, preferring instead that any information the contract itself says must not be disclosed be omitted.
MPs were considering the Energy Bill.
The text of the rejected amendment was:
- amendment: 9, page 108, line 24, at end insert—
- ‘( ) For the purposes of paragraphs 1 and 2, information is “confidential information” only if it constitutes a trade secret.’.
MPs voted on the question:
- That the amendment be made.
This relates to investment contracts under which subsidies are paid to electricity generators which the Secretary of State is required to lay before Parliament; without the amendment the Secretary of State would be required to omit information the contract itself said must not be disclosed, the amendment would have reduced the amount of information withheld from Parliament.
