Defence Expenditure (NATO Target) Bill — Second Reading — 23 Oct 2015 at 13:45

Robert Goodwill MP, Scarborough and Whitby did not vote.

The majority of MPs voted for the United Kingdom to spend at least 2% of its gross domestic product on defence.

MPs were considering the Defence Expenditure (NATO Target) Bill[1]

The motion approved by the majority of MPs taking part in the vote was:

  • That the Bill be now read a Second time.

Approval of this motion by the majority of MPs meant the Bill could continue on its path to becoming law.

The 2015-16 budget[2] contained a £45 billion allocation for defence. The UK GDP for 2014 was 2,945.146 billion dollars[3], or about 1950 billion pounds, so defence spending was already at 2.3%
