Psychoactive Substances Bill — New Clause 1 — Personal, Social and Health Education. — 20 Jan 2016 at 16:15
Iain Duncan Smith MP, Chingford and Woodford Green voted against making personal, social and health education a foundation subject in the national curriculum.
The majority of MPs voted against making Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), including drugs education, a foundation subject in the national curriculum.
MPs were considering the Psychoactive Substances Bill[1]. The proposed new clause[2] rejected in this vote began:
- "(1) In section 84(3) of the Education Act 2002 (curriculum foundation subjects for the first, second and third key stages), after paragraph (g) there is inserted—
- (gi) personal, social and health education.
- ..."
An explanatory note accompanying the rejected new clause stated[2]:
- This would amend the Education Act to make PHSE, with drugs education including new psychoactive substances, a foundation subject in the national curriculum.
