Finance Bill — Clause 125 — VAT: Women's Sanitary Products — 5 Sep 2016 at 23:15
Derek Thomas MP, St Ives voted voted not to exempt women's sanitary products from VAT as of the 1st of April 2018, deciding instead to let Treasury ministers determine if, and when, a zero-rating would come into force.
The majority of MPs voted not to exempt women's sanitary products from VAT as of the 1st of April 2018, deciding instead to let Treasury ministers determine if, and when, a zero-rating would come into force.
MPs were considering the Finance Bill[1].
The amendment rejected in this vote was:
- Amendment: 144, page 205, line 32, leave out “such” and insert
“1 April 2018, or on any prior”.
The rejected amendment would have impacted Clause 125(5) which provided for determining when the zero VAT rating of women's sanitary products would come into force:
- The amendments made by this section have effect in relation to supplies made, and acquisitions and importations taking place, on or after such day as the Treasury may by regulations made by statutory instrument appoint.
The rejected amendment would have set a firm date of the 1st of April 2018 rather than leaving it up to regulations to set the date and bring the zero-rating into effect.
