Kelvin Hopkins MP, Luton North voted against requiring a report on a referendum for ratifying the United Kingdom's new relationship with the European Union.
The majority of MPs voted against making a report on a referendum for ratifying the United Kingdom's new relationship with the European Union a prerequisite for the Prime Minister giving notification of the United Kingdom's intent to withdraw from the European Union.
MPs were considering the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill.
The proposed amendment rejected in this vote was:
- Amendment 43, page 1, line 5, at end insert—
‘(3) Before exercising the power under section 1, the Prime Minister must prepare and publish a report on the process for ratifying the United Kingdom’s new relationship with the European Union through a public referendum.”
Had it not been rejected the amendment would have added an additional subclause at the end of clause one of the Bill.
Clause 1(1) of the Bill containing power under section 1 referred to stated:
- (1) The Prime Minister may notify, under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the EU.
