The Earl of Lytton voted against European Union or European Economic Area citizens legally resident in the UK retaining their EU derived-rights when the UK leaves the European Union.
The majority of members of the House of Lords voted for European Union or European Economic Area citizens legally resident in the UK to retain their EU derived-rights when the UK leaves the European Union.
The House of Lords was considering the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill[1].
The proposed amendment agreed in this vote was:
- 9B: Clause 1, page 1, line 3, at end insert—
- “( ) Within three months of exercising the power under section 1(1), Ministers of the Crown must bring forward proposals to ensure that citizens of another European Union or European Economic Area country and their family members, who are legally resident in the United Kingdom on the day on which this Act is passed, continue to be treated in the same way with regards to their EU derived-rights and, in the case of residency, their potential to acquire such rights in the future.”
Clause 1(1) of the Bill referred to[2] stated:
- (1) The Prime Minister may notify, under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the EU.
