Bus Services Bill — Ban on Local Government in England Running Bus Services — 27 Mar 2017 at 18:45

Tom Elliott MP, Fermanagh and South Tyrone did not vote.

The majority of MPs voted to ban English local councils, and other local government bodies, from running bus services.

MPs were considering the Bus Services Bill[1].

The proposed amendment rejected in this vote was:

  • Amendment 1, page 78, line 4, leave out clause 22

Clause 22 of the Bill[2] was titled Bus companies: limitation of powers of authorities in England and the operative subclause (1) stated:

  • (1) A relevant authority may not, in exercise of any of its powers, form a company for the purpose of providing a local service.

The relevant authorities are English county and district councils, combined authorities, Integrated Transport Authorities and Passenger Transport Executives.
