Electoral Registration and Administration Bill — Clause 4 — Universities etc. to Provide Student Lists and Students to Be Written to With Individual Voter Registration Forms — 18 Jun 2012 at 21:32
Peter Aldous MP, Waveney voted against requiring higher and further education institutions to provide lists of students at the start of each academic year and against requiring electoral registration officers to write individually to all students with an electoral registration form.
The majority of MPs voted against requiring higher and further education institutions to provide lists of students at the start of each academic year and against requiring electoral registration officers to write individually to all students with an electoral registration form.
MPs were considering the Electoral Registration and Administration Bill[1]. The amendment rejected in this vote was:
- Amendment 9, page 4, line 13, at end insert—
- ‘(5A) All higher and further education institutions must cooperate with local officers in providing a comprehensive list of students in all forms of residential accommodation.
- (5B) Such lists must be provided at the start of each academic year.
- (5C) Local authority officers must write individually to all students with an electoral registration form.’.
Had the amendment not been rejected the above text would have been added to the end of Clause 4[2] of the Bill titled Annual canvass which relates to the maintenance of register of eligible voters and starts:
- Each registration officer in Great Britain must conduct an annual canvass in relation to the area for which the officer acts.
A canvass involves sending out voter registration forms and potentially following up forms which are, or are not, returned with inquiries.
