European Union (Referendum) Bill — Clause 2 — Votes for 16 and 17 Year Olds in Referendum on UK's Membership of the EU — 29 Nov 2013 at 09:30
The majority of MPs voted against allowing 16 and 17 year olds to vote in a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU.
The European Union (Referendum) Bill as introduced[1] stated:
- (1) Those entitled to vote in the referendum are—
- (a)the persons who, on the date of the referendum, would be entitled to vote as electors at a parliamentary election in any constituency, and
- (b)the persons who, on that date, are disqualified by reason of being peers from voting as electors at parliamentary elections.
Mike Gapes MP had proposed an amendment[2] numbered 44 on the day's amendment sheet[3] which would have added another category as follows:
- (2) Persons aged 16 or 17 on the date of the referendum shall be entitled to vote if they would, save for their age, be otherwise entitled to vote under any of the categories set out in subsection (1) above.’
There is some discussion in the debate about the potential impact of the referendum on the residents of British Overseas Territories.
