Abolition of the National Consumer Council and Transfer of Estate Agent Regulation to Powys Trading Standards — 12 Feb 2014 at 21:02

Elfyn Llwyd MP, Dwyfor Meirionnydd voted against abolishing the National Consumer Council and against transferring the regulation of estate agencies from the Office of Fair Trading to Powys trading standards.

The majority of MPs voted to abolish the National Consumer Council and to transfer the regulation of estate agencies from the Office of Fair Trading to Powys trading standards.

The explanatory memorandum to the regulation[1] summarise its key effects as being:

  • To abolish the National Consumer Council as of 1 April 2014 and transfer relevant functions to citizens advice services.
  • To transfer the Office of Fair Trading’s estate agency regulation functions to Powys trading standards as of 31 March 2014. (Powys trading standards were appointed through a competitive exercise to become the centre of excellence on estate agency enforcement)
  • To transfer some of the Office of Fair Trading’s consumer advice services to citizens advice services as of 1 April 2014.
