Criminal Justice and Courts Bill — New Clause 6 — Prison for Second Offence of Carrying a Knife — 17 Jun 2014 at 17:45

The majority of MPs voted for adults to face a minimum six-month jail sentence for a second, or subsequent, conviction for carrying a knife and that 16 to 18-year-olds would face a mandatory minimum four-month detention and training order in the same circumstances.

MPs were considering the Criminal Justice and Courts Bill^[1]. The motion rejected in this vote was:

• That the clause be read a Second time.

The clause in question was New Clause 6^[2] which introduced a presumption that someone over 16 convicted of a second or subsequent offence of carrying of offensive weapons without lawful authority or reasonable excuse or convicted of the offence of having article with blade or point in public place would be given a custodial sentence, and for those over 18 that sentence would be a sentence of imprisonment for a term of at least six months.
