Oliver Letwin MP, West Dorset voted in favour of proposed changes to firefighters' pensions including moving from a final salary to an average earnings based scheme.
The majority of MPs voted in favour of proposed changes to firefighters' pensions including moving from a final salary to an average earnings based scheme.
The motion rejected by the majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That Firefighters' Pension Scheme (England) Regulations 2014 (S.I., 2014, No. 2848), dated 23 October 2014, a copy of which was laid before this House on 28 October, be revoked.
At the time of this vote the regulations had been made but had not yet come into force. They were due to come into force on 1st April 2015
The regulations establish a new pension scheme for certain firefighters.
The new scheme provided for by the regulations which were the subject of this vote include a pension calculated by reference to the member’s career average earnings.
The scheme in effect at the time of the vote had been introduced by the The Firefighters’ Pension Scheme (England) Order 2006 which provided for a pension calculated on the basis of their final year's pay.
There are other differences between the schemes, including in relation to the impact of early retirement on pensions.
