European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill — Clause 1 — Report on Referendum to Ratify the UK's New Relationship with the EU — 8 Feb 2017 at 18:05
David Lidington MP, Aylesbury voted against requiring a report on a referendum for ratifying the United Kingdom's new relationship with the European Union.
The majority of MPs voted against making a report on a referendum for ratifying the United Kingdom's new relationship with the European Union a prerequisite for the Prime Minister giving notification of the United Kingdom's intent to withdraw from the European Union.
MPs were considering the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill[1].
The proposed amendment rejected in this vote was:
- Amendment 43, page 1, line 5, at end insert—
‘(3) Before exercising the power under section 1, the Prime Minister must prepare and publish a report on the process for ratifying the United Kingdom’s new relationship with the European Union through a public referendum.”
Had it not been rejected the amendment would have added an additional subclause at the end of clause one of the Bill[2].
Clause 1(1) of the Bill containing power under section 1 referred to stated:
- (1) The Prime Minister may notify, under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the EU.
