Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill — New Clause 1 — Ground Rent for Existing Long Leases — 24 Jan 2022 at 20:30

The majority of MPs voted not to restrict ground rents on all existing long residential leases to a peppercorn

MPs were considering the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill.[1][2][3]

The proposed new clause rejected by the majority of MPs in this vote was: Ground rent for existing long leases and stated:

  • Within 30 days of the day on which this Act comes into force, the Secretary of State must publish draft legislation to restrict ground rents on all existing long residential leases to a peppercorn.”

The rejected amendment was accompanied by the following explanatory statement from its proposer:

  • This new clause aims to ensure that the Government introduces further legislation to remove ground rent for all leaseholders, whereas the Act currently only applies to newly established leases.
