Finance Bill — Rate of duty on spirits — 28 Jul 1997
Charles Kennedy MP, Ross, Skye and Inverness West voted in the minority (Aye).
The Aye voters failed to pass an amendment to the Finance Bill 1997 that would have deleted the following lines from the Bill:
"Rate of duty on spirits-
(1) In section 5 of the [1979 c. 4.] Alcoholic Liquor Duties Act 1979 (spirits), for “£18.99” there shall be substituted “£19.56”.
(2) This section shall come into force on 1st January 1998."
Consequently, we can see that the amendment would have stopped the increase in duty on spirits.
