Localism Bill — Third Reading — 18 May 2011 at 18:45

The majority of MPs voted to devolve more powers to local councils and local people particularly in relation to social housing and planning.

MPs were considering the Localism Bill[1] and the motion approved by the majority of MPs in this vote was:

  • That the Bill be now read the Third time.

The passing of this motion indicated support for the Bill as it stood and allowed the Bill to continue its path towards becoming law.

Key provisions of the Bill include[1]:

  • giving councils a general power of competence
  • allowing councils to choose to return to the committee system of governance and allowing for referendums for elected mayors in certain authorities
  • abolishing the requirement to have a Home Information Pack
  • improving the ability of social tenants to move to different areas.
  • introducing for neighbourhood plans
  • making it so the Secretary of State takes the final decision on major infrastructure proposals of national importance
