The majority of MPs voted against adding caste to the list of protected characteristics listed in the Equalities Act.

Amendment 37[2] was to insert a new clause as follows:
- ''“Equality Act 2010: caste discrimination
- (1) The Equality Act 2010 is amended as follows.
- (2) After section 9(1)(c) (race) insert— “(d) caste;”.”
