Queen's Speech — Raising National Minimum Wage Faster than Average Earnings — 11 Jun 2014 at 18:45

The majority of MPs voted against raising the National Minimum Wage faster than average earnings.

MPs were considering sending a message of thanks to the monarch for attending Parliament to read out the Government's legislative programme.

The proposed text of the message was:

  • Most Gracious Sovereign,
  • We, Your Majesty’s most dutiful and loyal subjects, the Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in Parliament assembled, beg leave to offer our humble thanks to Your Majesty for the Gracious Speech which Your Majesty has addressed to both Houses of Parliament.

The addition of the following text was rejected in this vote:

  • but
  • regret that the measures in the Gracious Speech fail to ensure that those who put in a hard day’s work get a decent reward for doing so, or cut the costs to the social security system resulting from the current record 5.2 million workers on low pay and the rising tide of insecurity at work; and
  • call on your Government to bring forward measures setting the Low Pay Commission a five year target to raise the National Minimum Wage faster than average earnings while retaining the capacity to take account of shocks to the economy.”.
