Finance Bill — New Clause 1 — Report on Impact of Value Added Tax — 25 Mar 2015 at 16:15

The majority of MPs voted against requiring a report on the impact of Value Added Tax (VAT).

MPs were considering the Finance Bill[1].

The proposed new clause rejected in this vote stated:

  • (1) The Chancellor of the Exchequer shall, within three months of the passing of this Act, publish a report on the impact of the increase in the standard rate of VAT which took effect from 4 January 2011.
  • (2) The report must estimate the impact of the increase in the standard rate of value added tax on—
  • (a) living standards;
  • (b) small businesses;
  • (c) the fairness of the taxation system; and
  • (d) economic growth.

The text of the defeated motion which was the subject of this vote was:

  • That the clause be read a Second time.
