The majority of MPs voted to allow the referendum on the UK remaining a member of the EU to be held on the same day as other elections.
MPs were considering the European Union Referendum Bill[1].
The amendment rejected in this vote was:
- Amendment 3, in clause 4, page 2, line 39, leave out subsection (2) and insert—
- ‘(2) The referendum shall not be held on the same day as:
- (a) elections to the Scottish Parliament;
- (b) elections to the National Assembly for Wales;
- (c) elections for the Mayor of London; or
- (d) local authority elections”.

The amendment would prevent the referendum being held on the same day as Scottish Parliament, National Assembly for Wales, London mayoral or local authority elections
Subsection 2 of clause 4[2] which would have been replaced had this amendment not been rejected empowered ministers to make regulations combining the referendum on the UK remaining a member of the EU with other referenda or elections.
