Welfare Reform and Work Bill — New Clause 8 — Tax Credit Reductions — Transitional Protection — 27 Oct 2015 at 15:00

The majority of MPs voted against a transitional scheme to protect those currently receiving tax credits as reductions in the amounts paid are brought in.

MPs were considering the Welfare Reform and Work Bill[1].

The proposed new clause which was rejected in this vote was titled Tax credit reforms and stated:

  • The measures in this Bill and (Income Thresholds and Determination of Rates) (Amendment) Regulations 2015 relating to the award of tax credits and the relevant entitlement within Universal Credit shall not take effect until the Secretary of State has implemented a scheme for full transitional protection for a minimum of three years for all families and individuals currently receiving tax credits before 5 April 2016, such transitional protection to be renewable after three years with parliamentary approval

The regulations in question were approved by a majority of MPs in a vote on the 15th of September 2015 and are described fully within the description of that vote.
