The majority of MPs voted in favour of proposals for the detailed operation of the new state pension scheme in respect of deferrals, overseas residents and inheritance of retirement benefits.
The motion supported by the majority of MPs taking part in this vote was:
- That the draft State Pension and Occupational Pension Schemes (Miscellaneous Amendments) Regulations 2016, which were laid before this House on 30 November 2015, be approved.
The regulations set out details of the new state pension introduced by the Pensions Act 2014 including[1]:
- how the weekly rate at which a pension is paid will increase by if the date of starting to claim it is deferred.
- transitional arrangements for dealing with inherited retirement benefits from a spouse or civil partner.
- continuing the long-standing policy of not up-rating the state pension in payment to people who are "overseas residents" except for people in countries where a reciprocal agreement is in place.
