Police Grant Report (England and Wales) for 2016-17 — Level of Central Government Funding for Policing — 10 Feb 2016 at 15:41

The majority of MPs voted to set central government funding of policing for 2016-17 at a level 2.7% lower than was set for 2015-16.

The motion approved by the majority of MPs taking part in the vote, and the majority of those from England and Wales was:

• That the Police Grant Report (England and Wales) for 2016–17 (HC 753), which was laid before this House on 4 February, be approved.

The report set the total 2015-16 central government grant for policing at £7,421,588,629 (The figure was £7,630,719,732 for 2015-16^[1])

The central government grants are one of the ways policing in England and Wales is funded; council tax is another significant source of funding. Some of the government grant is paid as a "council tax freeze grant" paid where policing bodies decided in the past not to increase their element of council tax above a level set by the government.

This was a vote which specifically and solely affects England and Wales so a double majority, of both the MPs from the areas affected, and of the whole house, was required for it to pass.

Votes cast by all members of Parliament:

Ayes 310, Noes 212.

Votes cast by members for constituencies in England and Wales:

Ayes 305, Noes 208.
