Draft Important Public Services (Health) Regulations 2017 — 40% Strike Ballot Threshold for Key Health Workers — 8 Feb 2017 at 20:51
Melanie Onn MP, Great Grimsby voted against requiring the support of 40% of those entitled to vote in a ballot for industrial action by border security workers to be required for such action to be lawful.
The majority of MPs voted for the support of 40% of those entitled to vote in a ballot for industrial action by key health workers to be required for such action to be lawful.
The motion supported by the majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That the draft Important Public Services (Health) Regulations 2017, which were laid before this House on 5 December 2016, be approved.
The regulations defined those working in
- emergency ambulance services
- hospital accident and emergency services
- hospital high-dependency, intensive care units
- certain psychiatric, obstetric and midwifery services
as providers of "important public services" in relation to which there is a requirement for the support of 40% of those entitled to vote in a ballot for industrial action for such action to be lawful.
The provision allowing regulations defining "important public services" which are subject to the 40% threshold was introduced by section 3 of the Trade Union Act 2016 which amends section 226 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992.
