Early Parliamentary General Election — 19 Apr 2017 at 14:27

The majority of MPs voted to hold an election for members of the House of Commons.

The motion supported by the majority of MPs in this vote was:

  • That there shall be an early parliamentary general election.

The motion was of the form set out in section 2(2) of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. Under the Act for an early general election to take place the number of MPs in favour had to be equal to or greater than two thirds of the number of seats in the House (including vacant seats); that threshold was comfortably met in this case.

Had an early general election not been called then under Section 1 of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 the election would have been held on the first Thursday in May in 2020.

Section 2(7) of the Act provides for the precise date of the early election to be proclaimed by the monarch on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
