The majority of MPs taking part voted to hold a general election, but the two-thirds threshold set in the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 required to prompt such an election was not met.
The motion supported by a majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That there shall be an early parliamentary general election.
Section 2(1) of the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 set a threshold for such motions to have effect stating:
- if the motion is passed on a division, the number of members who vote in favour of the motion is a number equal to or greater than two thirds of the number of seats in the House (including vacant seats).
The reference to an "early" general election relates to an election which would be held before the date otherwise provided for in the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011.
