Environment Bill — Clause 4 — Environmental Targets: Effect — 20 Oct 2021 at 16:46
The majority of MPs voted not to require interim targets for environmental matters to be met.
The targets in question were not set explicitly in the Bill but would be set by the Government and relate to environmental matters including air quality, water, biodiversity, resource efficiency and waste reduction.
MPs were considering the Environment Bill.[1][2]
The motion supported by a majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That this House disagrees with Lords amendment 12.
Lords amendment 12[4] stated:
- Page 3, line 26, at end insert—
- “(c) interim targets are met.
Had it not been rejected this amendment would have impacted Clause 4 of the Bill[3] which was titled: Environmental targets: effect and stated:
- It is the duty of the Secretary of State to ensure that—
- (a) targets set under section 1 are met, and
- (b) the PM 2.5 air quality target set under section 2 is met.
Clauses 10 and 13 of the Bill[3] provided for interim targets to be set.
