The majority of MPs voted not to make it an offence to advertise services designed to facilitate illegal immigration.
MPs were considering the Nationality and Borders Bill.[1][2][3]
The proposed new clause rejected in this vote was titled: Advertising assistance for unlawful immigration to the United Kingdom and stated:
- (1) It is an offence to advertise by any means, including using social media, services designed to facilitate the commission of an offence under section 25 of the Immigration Act 1971.
- (2) A person guilty of an offence under this section shall be liable—
- (a) on conviction on indictment, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years, to a fine or to both, or
- (b) on summary conviction, to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum or to both.
The motion rejected in this vote was:
- That the clause be read a Second time.
