European Union — Regulation of Emission of Pollutants from Ships — 17 Oct 2012 at 19:45

The majority of MPs voted in favour of proposed European Union action to regulate emissions of pollutants, particularly sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides from ships.

The text of the approved motion stated:

• That this House
• takes note of European Union Document No. 13016/11 and Addendum, relating to a Commission Communication on the review of the implementation of Directive 1999/32/EC related to the sulphur content of certain liquid fuels and on further pollutant emissions reduction from maritime transport, and No. 12806/11 and Addenda 1 and 2, relating to a draft Directive amending Directive 1999/32/EC as regards the sulphur content of marine fuels; and
• supports the Government’s view that the proposed compromise, which is closely aligned with the international standard in the MARPOL Convention, is a welcome outcome.
