The majority of MPs voted not to ban political parties in the United Kingdom from accepting donations from overseas electors.
An overseas elector is a registered elector not resident in the United Kingdom.
MPs were considering the Elections Bill.[1][2][3]
The proposed new clause rejected in this vote was titled: Permissible donors and stated:
- (1) Section 54 (permissible donors) of PPERA is amended as follows.
- (2) In subsection (2)(a), after “register” insert “at the time at which the donation is made, but not an individual so registered as an overseas elector;
The rejected new clause was accompanied by the following statement from its proposer:
- This new clause would prevent overseas electors donating to political parties in the UK.
The clause the rejected amendment would have impacted stated the following is a permissible donor:
- an individual registered in an electoral register
