The majority of MPs voted to empower the regulator of trade unions and employers’ associations, the Certification Officer, to impose financial penalties on the bodies it regulates for breaches of the law.
The motion supported by the majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That the draft Trade Union (Power of the Certification Officer to Impose Financial Penalties) Regulations 2022, which were laid before this House on 14 December 2021, be approved.
The laws in question relate to union elections/ballots, rules banning certain offenders (who have been involved in breaches of trade union law) from certain union offices, and various transparency requirements including those relating to annual returns and the provision of information to members.
