Police and Justice Bill — 10 Oct 2006 at 19:24

Series of amendments relating to whether the Prisons Inspectorate should be independent from the government's proposed merged Criminal Justice Inspectorate (to include police, probation etc). The vote is on amendment 87:
Page 25, leave out line 6 and insert "and Community Safety"
Page 25 of the then-current version of the Bill is here. The amendment changed the wording of paragraph 27 clause (1) from
Her Majesty may appoint a person to be Chief Inspector for Justice, Community Safety and Custody.
to
Her Majesty may appoint a person to be Chief Inspector for Justice and Community Safety.
The effect of the amendment is that the new Chief Inspector for Justice and Community Safety will be *in addition to* the current Chief Inspector of Prisons, rather than replacing him.

On Question, Whether the said amendment (No. 87) shall be agreed to?

Their Lordships divided: Contents, 211; Not-Contents, 98.
