Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill — New Clause 6 — Protection of Beliefs About Marriage — 20 May 2013 at 19:00

The majority of MPs voted against adding beliefs regarding the definition of marriage to the list of protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010, discrimination on the basis of which is illegal.

The text of the rejected proposed new clause for the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill[1] stated:

  • ‘(1) In the Equality Act 2010, after section 10(3), insert —
  • “(4) The protected characteristic of religion or belief may include a belief regarding the definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman.”.’
