Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill — Date of Referendum on Alternative Vote System for Electing MPs — 6 Dec 2010 at 16:58
The majority of members of the House of Lords voted allow the referendum on moving to use the "alternative vote" system for electing MPs to be held any time before 31 October 2011 rather than specifying the date in law.
The House of Lords was considering the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill[1]. The amendment accepted in this vote was:
- Amendment 5: Clause 1, page 1, line 6, leave out "on 5 May" and insert "before 31 October"
This affected Clause 1(2) of the Bill[2] which at the time of the vote stated:
- The referendum must be held on 5 May 2011.
